CSIP Participated in Strategy Workshop on Trade Impact Assessment for Cambodia
Wednesday-Thursday, 3-4 November 2020 – CSIP was invited to participate in the methodology and strategy workshop on trade impact assessment for Cambodia, held at Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra Hotel, Cambodia. The workshop is part of ASEAN Regional Integration Support – Trade-Related Technical Assistance (ARISE Plus Cambodia) Project funded by European Union and executed by GIZ and Ministry of Commerce.
The workshop was chaired by H.E Sok Sopheak, Secretary of State of Ministry of Commerce and Chairman of ARISE Plus Cambodia project.
The purposes of the workshop are:
- To develop a common understanding among workshop participants about the current practice and challenges with trade impact assessments of the country;
- To introduce workshop participants to common practices/implementation of trade impact assessments, which encompass economic, social & human rights, and environmental impacts;
- To create a forum for relevant stakeholders to discuss and agree on a practical plan/model of trade impact assessments to be adopted by Cambodia, considering the current strengths and limitations of relevant line ministries and the socio-political situation of the country; and
- To discuss and agree on the next steps that need to be collectively undertaken to build trade impact assessment capacity of Cambodia.
Dr. Oum Sothea, Executive Director of CSIP, shared experiences particularly on facilitating factors and challenges on trade impact assessment. He also emphasized the needs required for effective trade impact assessment in Cambodia. Mr. Chea Huot, trade and private sector specialist of CSIP, also shared views in the session of analysis of social and human rights impacts of trade agreements.
